Our story
Built to close one quiet gap
Namela was founded on a simple observation: talented young people across township, rural and under-resourced schools are making the most consequential decisions of their lives without the information to make them well.
Who we are
A career navigation infrastructure organisation
Namela Development Institute is a South African youth development organisation working to improve the educational, career and life outcomes of young people. We exist to close the gap between the moment a young person makes a life-shaping decision and their access to the information needed to make it well.
We are not a once-off careers talk. We are building career navigation infrastructure: the assessments, guidance and application support that help a learner choose the right subjects, the right qualification and the right pathway, before time and money are spent on the wrong one.
Career guidance is the service we deliver. Career navigation is the outcome we are measured by.
Our founding premise
“This is, at its core, a problem of access to information. And it is solvable.”

Vision & mission
A South Africa where every learner chooses confidently
A South Africa in which every young person can access quality career guidance, make informed educational decisions and move confidently into further education, training, entrepreneurship or employment.
Bridge the information, guidance and access gap
To bridge the information, guidance and access gap that prevents many learners and young people from making informed career and post-school decisions, starting in the schools and communities least served.
Our values
Values with their boots on
Every learner deserves to decide well
Every young person deserves the information to make decisions that serve their interests and capabilities.
We go where guidance is scarce
We deliberately prioritise township, rural and under-resourced schools where professional career guidance is hardest to access.
Individual progress, collective benefit
A young person who navigates well lifts a household, and over time a community. Individual success and collective progress are bound together.
We measure what changes
We measure not only what we deliver but what changes as a result. Data informs every decision we make about delivery.
Built to outlast any grant cycle
We are engineered to endure beyond any single funder. A blended income model protects the young people we serve.
Young people are capable authors
We treat every young person as a capable author of their own future, not a recipient of charity.
Where we work
Starting in the heart of the country
Namela is headquartered in the Free State. Our pilot programme starts here, with a deliberate focus on township, rural and under-resourced schools before expanding provincially and nationally.
