How to apply to a South African university
University applications in South Africa happen earlier than most learners expect. Knowing the process, the requirements and the deadlines before matric begins is what separates successful applications from missed opportunities.
Understanding your application
What universities look at
Admission Point Score (APS)
Your APS is calculated from your final matric marks. Each subject gets a rating from 1 to 7 based on your percentage. Universities and programmes each have a minimum APS requirement.
Subject requirements
Beyond APS, most programmes require specific subjects. Engineering needs Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Medicine needs Life Sciences and Chemistry. Law often needs English. Know your programme’s requirements before Grade 11.
NBT scores
Some universities require the National Benchmark Test (NBT). These test academic literacy, quantitative literacy and mathematics. Check whether your chosen university requires it.
APS calculation guide
Life Orientation is excluded from APS at most universities.

Choose your subjects carefully
Make sure your subject choices in Grade 9 keep the doors open for the university programmes you are interested in.
Research programmes and requirements
Find out the APS and subject requirements for programmes you are considering. Start researching bursaries and funding options.
Applications open (April–May)
Most universities open applications from April. Apply as early as possible. Popular programmes fill up fast.
Main application deadline (September–October)
Most universities close applications in September or October. Some close earlier for competitive programmes. Do not miss this window.
Apply for NSFAS and bursaries (September–November)
Apply for NSFAS and relevant bursaries at the same time as your university application. Missing funding deadlines is one of the most costly mistakes.
Matric results and conditional acceptance
Results are released in January. Universities confirm or revise offers based on final marks. Accept your offer and confirm your registration promptly.
